Your FEAR!

Women who are terrified of childbirth are more likely to have c-sections by Bonnie Rochman I love it when their research shows that it’s all women’s fault. Women are too fat, too narrow, too posh and too scared. How very very convenient for all the men making money off birth. More comics to come.

And I suppose that it’s not the doctors’ place to diagnose and treat “birth phobia”, and generally fill women with confidence in their ability to give birth? Funny that, since according to research, phobias are nearly 100% treatable! Guess 37 weeks (snark) isn’t long enough. Seriously, while association is not causation, if fear of childbirth is associated with a higher rate of surgical births, why is this fear not being dealt with? Does the medical profession really believe this is normal, or that it’s a good thing to add abdominal surgery and a sense of failure to a pre-existing anxiety disorder? The whole situation is sadly Victorian. (Just close your eyes, and think of England….)

you are so right! our whole society is completely fear based. how many good birth stories do you even hear? and if you watch any of those having a baby shows all you get is fear, pain, anxiety, and failure. and in the end all that really matters is that the baby is alive, and who gives a crap about the mom… how is she doing emotionally? if she isn’t happy to just be alive and have a baby then she is just one selfish f’d up person. who cares if this major life changing event was usurped and made total crap… the baby is alive.
why don’t they care? why isn’t it their job? why?

Whatever. I know too many women who were afraid to have a c-section but felt pushed into one by the end.

I agree — if the doctors think fear is a problem, they should try doing ONE. THING. to help. Like not bringing up scare tactics. Or suggesting positive books to read. Or, you know, actually LISTENING to how the mama FEELS at a prenatal appointment. Women who are scared are vulnerable to being pushed around by someone who seems to know what they’re doing. So … stop pushing vulnerable women around, k?
